Ok, so I get back tonight from being gone for a week (and driving about 6 hours, which pretty much sets me off anyway) and all the sudden my god damn computer doesn't want to stay powered up. I hit the switch, HD and power lights come on for about 1 second and then shut down. I tried killing the main for awhile and that did nothing, checked all my connectors, even switched power and reset around just to see if it was the buttons themselves, fucking no dice...

The weird thing is, if I hold down the reset, the power stays on, of course that means nada since it doesn't load anything and the minute I release it, it fucking shuts down again.

I searched Coolmaster and they don't seem to have a recurring enough issue to have anything out there about it.

So yeah, its a Coolermaster Cosmos case. I can't remember what motherboard it is, but if it matter I'll pull that shit too...

Fucking "cutting edge" my ass

So, what did anyone think of the new iphone announcement? Considering we are all geeks and like gadgets.. better/worse then the new 9xxx blackberries that are scheduled for release? Still rolling with a Palm or a Windows CE device? Me, I love my Nokia's, but depending on how contract time goes, I could see myself with one of these come the fall. Fast 3G with GPS.. and the google integration? that's nice.

MAC question.

I recently bought a mac book pro and I can't stand the brushed metal GUI. I mean of all the themes they could have chosen, even a flat grey [like Windows 98] would have been great for a default look, but "brushed metal" makes me want to puke. Question is, has anyone here tried any third party skinning programs for the mac OS, and if so do they seem to slow it down like Windows Blinds does?

I have been looking at Shapeshifter, as it has plenty of basic nice looking color themes. I am not trying to get any weird Vista-like transparency layered windows, just something other then *yuck* brushed metal.

Anyone?

Linux Console Text Size

My latest stupid Linux question:
How do I get a more reasonable font size at the command line? Naturally it defaults to the bog-standard PC blinky-cursor BIOS screen size letters we all know and love. This box I'm working with is a lowly VIA C3 800mhz with the usual craptastic shared video RAM, so I want something simple and small. I find mention of something called "framebuffer".... is that the right thing?

OK, quick question. Anyone looking for a video card?

About 2 months ago i bought a new high end system which included this video card: eVGA GeForce 7950GX2 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Dual GPU Video Card - Retail

Now, the same guys are putting out a special deal so i will be buying the new GTX 8800 [too bad i cannot get the OC version, wah!], and so i have decided i need to find someone to buy my "old" 7950. Now it is retail, has been babied [have not touched it since i turned it on except with the air in a can twice inside the case], it is only 2 months out of the box and its from me. Consider it new- The cheapest i could find it for was $439 on newegg, but that was an OEM version. I would be happy to part with it for 400, any takers? If i cannot find someone after a week or so, i will have to look elsewhere. Because if i have to ebay it, id like to do it while it is worth more. I wont ask full price+shipping or any bullshit from anyone here. Just that you pay me first, or that we do a same time swap. Either is cool. I am staying in San Diego right now, but ill do retail box with everything first class all the way with full insurance and whatever no cost to you [within the US! hehe].

So, its 2 months old, i have everything for it, asking price is $400.00 even, just reply to this message with email or phone number or whatever. Cool, hope someone will find a this card a good home. >D BTW it kicks ass, but I'm in a good place and well i would be a fool not to upgrade to the other card now. That's for certain, i just want to give you guys first dibs, if your looking for a card.

Wow, i suck at writing apparently... WTF!?

And its not the grade that upsets me, its because my teachers reason is this: Need to follow better writing convection's. That's it. That's all he had to say, and still gave me a damn D! WTF is wrong with this? I don't get it.....

DSL vs. Cable vs Clearwire

Well, our house closes escrow on the 20th, so I am looking to change my internet service. I have been using cable since hella long time ago, so I never kept up with the others. Now the wife wants to ditch the cable, which is fine, but I am curious on everyone's thoughts on cable, DSL, and Clearwire...

How hard is it to install DSL, btw? SBC wants to charge like $200 for it.

Debian is quite satisfactory

OK, so after a year of pig-wrestling with my (long ago abandoned by Sun) Cobalt-Linux based Raq which can't run MySQL or Php beyond v3.x or so without the (required) Cobalt web interface barfing on your shoes, I've had enough. $300 later I am setting up an AMD64 whitebox to run Debian (apt-get update, apt-get upgrade! up yours, you jackass "install only one package at a time through the slow-ass web interface with no indication of dependencies" dorks at Sun/Cobalt!).
So I installed KDE and X for those occasions where it's too annoying to navigate a site with links(1) to find the latest tar.gz mirror, and now the damn box boots up with that stupid KDE graphical login prompt. I'm a console kinda guy. I know I could just hit ctrl-alt-Fkey, but I don't wanna see that graphical shit unless I ASK for it.

So help a dumbass out: how do I make the KDE GUI login go away?

Shell Scripts
Quick Questions ]

OK, so now I'm up to shell scripts. There are a shitload of tutorials all over the place on 'em, but being that I don't know what I'm trying to do, I don't know how to search for the answer.

I'm setting up a cron job to grab a webcam output periodically via wget. I want the jpg (which always has the same name remotely) to be saved locally as the output of "date +%y%j%H%M%S" with ".jpg" on the end. I know this has to be a simple one-liner with pipes, but I can't figure out how. I can tag "-O=" onto the beginning and ".jpg" onto the end of the date format string, so I've got the first argument for wget. Problem is, when I pipe date into wget, date has a newline at the end of it and wget still needs the URL as the second argument. Even writing up a multi-line shell script and redirecting to a file via >> still stymies me with that newline at the end of date's output. How do I strip that dang newline?

Also, is there any way to do "nested pipes" or the equivalent?
