In my attempt to make myself feel better I went out and spent some money on myself. I just picked up a Lenovo X301 laptop (demo unit, last one in the store) and it's brilliant. What a fantastic little laptop. 13" (1400x900), great screen, fantastic keyboard, wifi, wlan, SSD drive, I've loaded it up to 4gb and win7 is quick as can be. Just brilliant. This thing is even lighter then my Atom netbook. I've always wanted to get a Thinkpad since even before IBM sold them but they have always been a bit on the $$ side.. but since I'm going to be doing some traveling and training, I figured time to get a better notebook. I'm totally happy with the purchase. I almost got one of the T410s's, but I saved over $500 getting the X301 and it seems to be that it might be a quieter, cooler and plenty powerful laptop. Yeah Me.

Code ]

So volt may or may not remember this, but the main function used by THCNET that is responsible for displaying messages is a recursive hell beast of code. While it has worked all these years, it does make any changes involving it rather difficult. I pretty much have to stare at the code for a couple days before I remember what the hell I was thinking when writing it, and can get into a state where I can change it. Before that I usually say fuck it, and make yet another quick and ugly hack at it to address the issue at hand.

Normally I don't give two shits about celebrity news, as it is largely gossip and vicarious idiocy. However, I don't mind following celebrity news when it involves porn. This morning, the radio jocks was talking about how Vivid Entertainment has offered "Octomom" Nadya Suleman enough money to pay off her house if she would do a porno movie with them, something around $500K. Now the first thing in my mind is "hell no, that chick is not looking good!"

32 and 62 bit OSs coded in assembly. Lightwieght, tight and small. Might be neat if you want to play at the low lever again, since it's hard to find some way to learn the Old School. I wonder how I will teach my kids how to use computers, how they work, the history, etc. I hope they stay interested.

So this weekend was pretty sp0rk. My roommate fish bought a PDP-11 off eBay from some guy in Folsom, CA. So instead of paying a ton of money to ship 600 pounds of computer equipment, we figured we would just fly up to San Francisco, spend a couple days hanging out, and then rent a truck and drive it back for much cheaper.

So, anyone play with or try unraid? It's a RAID tech that allows you to run JBOD and have a parity drive and basically it does a funky type of RAID 4, but it doesn't stripe. So if more then one drive fails you only lost the data on the drive, not all the data. It's odd. They start going into math for MTBF and stuff like that when they try to justify it over RAID, but I just don't see it.

The Psychoholics win The LosT @ Con Mystery Challenge

Once again my Defcon weekend was consumed with mostly with Mystery Challenge, and has been totally worth the effort, since the team I was on, The Psychoholics, got the black badge, and the coveted HMFT (huge mother fucking tool) that LosT gives out to the winning team each year. This year the HMFT consisted of a 42 inch set of heavy duty bolt cutters. LosT also threw in a large suit case of swag, which we claimed some items from, and then gave the rest to the teams who came by the Hofbräuhaus for the post Defcon Mystery Challenge celebration.

I know some of us that use IMAP for accesses our mail accounts have lamented how crappy the normal mail client is. There a new one I was playing with called K-9 and it's brilliant. It allows for moving messages amongst folders (one of my biggest complaints) and has lots of other cool features. It's free (bonus) and has great adjustments to checking frequency and notification information. I totally recommend changing to this client if you use imap on an Android phone.. and Krux.. I recommend you get an Android phone and join the real world. :-)
