Seeing this makes me want to invest in a HD camera one of these days. http://www.willudesign.com/BlackDwarfTop.html It's a neat design. I'd like to see some more tests on the file speeds considering the card they used and if it was mtraid or done on the BIOS of the card. But that's a great shape and size for 16TB. Pretty cool. It also reminds me that I need a garage/workshop. I have a good portion of that. Only tool I didn't have that I saw him use was a scroll saw. My current project is building a new entertainment center. I'm using a couple Siemon racks I got a deal on, and just finished welding up a cross piece to connect the two (like a big H), and a TV mount that attaches to the cross piece. http://twitpic.com/1jvckf http://twitpic.com/1k99qx http://twitpic.com/1ka7l6 Got quite a bit better at welding doing all that. Fortunately the majority of the ugly welds are not really visible, Well none of them are visible unless you look behind the entertainment center once it's complete. Took me some trial and error before I finally figured out how to get a good bead with the sheet metal. Given that this is my first "real" welding project where the end result is I've made something (as opposed to just repairing things as I had done previously) I'd say it turned out fairly well. I probably need to invest in a good variety of metal clamps as well, since I really didn't have enough, or of the right type for what I was doing. "Money isn't everything... The mounting holes are 15 3/4" inches square, and I made the mount 2 inches bigger all the way around, so it can always be modified in the future for a different TV. It's over engineered, to be sure, but then, normally you don't weld your entertainment center together, and then lag bolt it into the floor. The racks are actually have a little shine to them, since it's a powder coat, but like I said, the pieces I'm welding up are going to be totally hidden by the TV, so it's more so you don't have the bare metal. Next time you decide you over engineer the crap outta something, try starting with some measurements. Its blocking your doorway(s). It's actually not that much wider than what was there before. It's like 4 inches bigger. Also I looked into moving the entertainment center to another wall, however with the couches, etc... if I moved the entertainment center, either the seating would be blocking things even worse, or half the seats would have a crappy viewing angle. And every other method of moving furniture around meant that there was a lot less seating, since there would be no place for the Sumo bean bag chairs, etc.. I even went so far as busting out the graph paper to see if there was any way of rearranging things. It's just a problem with the layout of that living room. It's big, but there are not a whole lot of ways you can really arrange the furniture in there and have it still be usable or wind up with a ton of dead space you can't use. Sure I could have spent a lot of money on some other solution, but this was next to nothing. Only real expense was for steel to weld up the crossbeam and tv mount. Plus I really wanted to weld something. What good is power if you can't abuse it? |
