Note that I'm not in it. You can check your privacy settings and try and make sure you don't show up in it either.

seems like it would be pretty easy (maybe expensive, but easy) to build a magnetic barrel and then set the device up on a tilt-able platform. Volt and I used magnetic dampening on our IEEE project in high school and it worked nicely, would make a keen "disk barrel". If its not precise though, it would reduce the velocity after the fact

I wanted to ask, based on viewing the video and reading the stuff you've written. Is there a reason you use a hard acrylic ring as the launch platform? I'm wondering aloud why not a hardened rubber ring or something that may absorb the shock without breaking. Maybe you've tried it and it didn't work?

I've since changed the material. Since the acrylic shattered. I'm using a fiberglass like material right now. Though at full power the wire ties still all break because of the forces involved. Current thinking is to either sandwich with a polycarbonate, or machine the coil out of a copper blank which is much sturdier.

Next phase in this type of machine is building a machine that can vaporize aluminum mesh. I need a LOT more capacitors however.

I just read a thing yesterday that youtube is going to take a stab at original programming. The things mentioned though all seemed to be the same shit that's posted on there already, but I suppose another source of art is always a good thing.

I still don't understand how free services (like Youtube) or low-fee subscription services (like Netflix) make money on original content. God bless them and I love them for it, but how does Netflix make money on their shows? There are no commercials. How many subscribers did they actually add? Is it all pending a long tail of DVD and merch sales?

Isn't it more a matter of keeping people subscribed? I know Netflix releases everything at once, and I think in time that will change (maybe?) but if they stagger out the releases of their shows, it's likely people will stick around just for that content and the ability to stream from their library on odd occasions.

It might be.

My perspective was skewed, I think. I've been on Netflix since early 2002 and it seemed to me in the last ten years that "everybody" has it now. Then the other day I'm seeing marketing material that says 81% of people aged 18-35 have Netflix now, a 9% increase over last year. Said differently: last year less than 75% of this age group had it. (And obviously fewer and fewer in the years before.) What that tells me is my perspective that "everybody" has had it for years is way off, and there are still plenty of people who are not yet giving Netflix money. So in hindsight I'm suspecting that their money making proposition is, essentially, getting more subs.

Why does my little timeline matter? Because their first original content was released late 2012 and really gained steam mid-2013. So I'm thinking they saw the number flattening in 2010 and looked to this as a new way of bringing in subs. Since they're a public company I'm going to try and find the time to read through their shareholder calls and 10-K filings to see if they break out the financial impact of their original content.

So Youtube makes money on advertisements. Most people producing videos don't make a whole hell of a lot off it, unless you are insanely popular for doing unboxing videos or something.. Interestingly enough, since I run IPv6 at home, I never see any Youtube ads. Something that has also taken off is Patreon. There are some youtube content producers that I give a couple bucks to, since I like the content they produce and I can afford it. A bit more direct way of paying those I think do cool stuff.

Check out AvE, Applied Science, colinfurze, Computerphile, Clickspring, Matthias Wandel, Numberphile, Sixty Cymbols, SmarterEveryDay, Vsauce, Veritasium

Dual stack, but since I have IPv6, windows prefers it by default. Wasn't even my goal to block ads, it's just they haven't built the ad servers on ipv6 yet.

I'm not sure I see the problem really. It doesn't pull up anything a google search wouldn't pick up (less probably, since you can set privacy). I'm pretty sparing on my public posts, but given that I don't have the whole system locked down, I just don't see the point in being paranoid. Yeah, you'll have no problem with that. I did look up my name in LinkedIn recently.. got a few more hits then before. I think there's now 4 or 5 of me floating around in the world.
