If I jumped right at 20, I'd make 50% base pay plus basic housing allowance, a good chunk of which is tax free. That and I have full burial w/ cremains (well an empty urn anyway) in Arlington, $400k life insurance, free VA med care (which has its dangers, no doubt), base access and retiree ID card. So grand scheme about $4400 a month not including benies if that were today. Definitely enough to live on, but I'd probably write for a few magazines and throw out a story now and then to up the buckage.

All that said, I will probably not retire early. Jasmine will be 6 years old and I still have a helluva lot of school/clothes/car/trips to pay for. I will likely keep working until she reaches high school age so that I can take over her home schooling and Sandra can return to journalism. That would but me into the 75% retirement range, give us a few more years to stable off, and hopefully outlive this war.It would to be hard to quit before it was "done"

Then I have social security to look forward to in my declining years... w00t (assuming its still there)

The ultimate suck is waking up 10 minutes before your alarm goes off. You could sleep for 15 hours, but it always seems the lost 10 minutes are the end of the world.

I just tried streaming Proton Radio ( http://www.protonradio.com/ ) and it sounded decent for such a small device. Better than what you get out of a clock radio, but not like a set of Bose speakers. Though there is a line out, so you could hook it into something with a bit more substance if you really wanted.

This 40K leatherman thing is just gold plated or something. There's nothing different from that leatherman and a $50 one. That's some BS.

oddly enough (and I don't think it warrants saying, but I do not condone the consumer-whoring of leatherman's any more than any other product), gold plating has made a lot of shit more expensive, like pretty much since man decided it was valuable.

putting little LEDs under keyboard keys, while clever for a few extra bucks, was straight fucking you in the ass at $1500

Not bad. That stopped being an alarm clock 150 dollars ago. I had to watch the little demo for 10 minutes before I actually saw that it tells time. And how long do you spend with your freaking alarm clock.
Now if you have to actually get up and ssh into it to shut off the alarm, then it is very effective at waking you up.
