Goddamn trojans

Fucking rub, probably sponsors this shit.

So my primary antivirus protection is not downloading shit. That works great, and when combined with hijackthis and teatimer, is good enough. I don't run your standard virus protection n my main computer because data is routed to a network drive (which does have AV) and it greatly reduces overhead. If I really want to download something, I will usually pretty exhaustively research it then download it onto the server. Except today

today, I decided I just wanted to wipe all tag entries from my MP3s. I have been putting it off, literally, for years and ended up with a wild hair. So I grabbed a reasonably high rated program off of CNET and tonight I get smacked with one of those bullshit "your computer is infected, we can save you" popups. Gah! ok, so I will see what hijacthish says... oh no, hijack this has become "infected" and you need our software to scan it. spybot, same thing... fuck

So a few forays into safe mode and reinstall of spybot (it had done something that made it permanently impossible to download updates, probably something to do with an unmodifiable "read-only" state) and all is well. I have restarted about a dozen times to make sure no regens are in play. seems to be cleaned up... but fuck, off cnet... sad day

Of course, the whole thing hit after I had personally consumed an entire bottle of ecco domani chianti. So trying to work through the cloudiness to fix everything was quite challenging

fuck the internet

So I used the whole "I got a virus, 'fraid I'm going to have to reformat... and since I'm reformatting, guess I should do some upgrades..." thing. Admittedly, it has been a long fucking minute since I had formatted, so in the grand scheme of things...

Anyway, finally upgraded to a terabyte. Unfortunately its spread out over a few drives. So I figured what the hell, I have never used a RAID array before, "how hard could it be." Now technically I just wanted to span the disks so I didn't have 300 fucking drives letters (No shit, with the drives, the card slots, the DVD array, blah blah, I'm up to flipping J: not including network drives), and technically a span isn't a RAID, but the set up is basically the same, so what the hell...

fuck that...

So, now that I have fully reloaded everything onto the C: drive, is it possible to span a fresh formatted drive to it, or is it simply not worth the effort?

You can mount a drive onto a directory instead of a drive letter, so it's not really spanned, but it's a lot safer than spanning since one failed drive doesn't take out your entire system.

Bummer... yea. I hadn't been running AV software and my machine got nailed as well while I was running the RC of Windows 7. Couldn't use IE, Firefox, or Google Chrome. Fortunately I had Safari installed and I was able to grab Spybot. Though any attempts to fix anything just made the machine unbootable. Now I run AV software.

Sucks ass man! I can also recommend Malwarebytes. It's a good program. Also, their site offers a randomly named executable that you can download should you still become infected that you can copy over to the program directory and run in cases of malware/virii and what have you fucking with the main executable. It's a constant in my arsenal. CCleaner is in there too, love me some CCleaner action to quickly purge so many of the temp folders. Much of the Malware I deal with these days is writing to the All Users App Data folder, writing with various random strings. Usually it's some variant of Vundo, which is a TOTAL pain in the ass... almost none of the Vundo removal tools work.

Yes, London. You know: fish, chips, cup 'o tea, bad food, worse weather, Mary fucking Poppins... LONDON.

That is where I found most of the trash was in the all users apps. It seems to be cleaned up now. I am seriously considering running a system restore, just in case something has creeped its way somewhere and I didn't find it. I haven't really done shit of consequence in the last few days anyway...

Malwarebytes is the dope. You got hit by fakealert. It probably wasn't the shit you downloaded or cnet. It was probably an ad server in one of cnet's iframes. They sell space to some ad agency, who then bids it out to Chico's Bail Bonds and Internet Advertisements, who then provides the content. Chico gets nailed with an SQL injection attack and poof, Caliber gets fucked.

I was able to remove it from easily using Malware Bytes, especially when there was another user account on the box.

Fuck McAfee and their slow lethargic POS AV software. Them and Symantec/Norton have been crap for the last 5 years in regards to decent, quick, AV that doesn't lock into 100% CPU usage for no reason. Damn that

I'll say it again, check out EST's Nod32 for AV. I used to use AVG Free and moved to this (payed) and it's been fantastic ever since. Catches the web based frame stuff, demo problems.. all good.

I'm using BitDefender at the moment. I normally use Kaspersky, but I wanted to try something different out for a bit.
