on Friday April 16, 2010 @ 05:56pm >> [ reply ][ rating +0 ] This is pretty cool. A guy decided that the price on laser cutters is stupidly expensive, and he could probably build his own machine, less than just the tax on a commercial machine. I figure this will be my next project after building the Mendel RepRap 3D printer. http://www.buildlog.net/cnc_laser/index.php The recent Epilog Laser Challenge at Instructables.com got me thinking about building a low cost CNC laser. The engraver they had as the prize had a list price of about $8,000. The income tax on that would be quite a lot. I thought a larger more powerful machine could easily be built for less than the amount you would have to pay for the tax. The Epilog Zing 16 is 30W with an area of 16" x 20". Try to beat that for less than $1,000. I understand that a huge part of what you get from Epilog is software, safety, support and a guarantee, so it is not a really fair challenge. what happened the the fusion generator and tesla coil? Caliber and I would shoot the shit about our kids, patriotism, military stuff, and the merits of plentiful parking in "rogue states." --formatc |

on Friday April 16, 2010 @ 07:28pm >> [ reply ][ rating +0 ] what happened the the fusion generator and tesla coil? Ok, so there are many next projects. This would be the next project of a tool that makes stuff. I priced out how much it would cost to get the parts laser cut from a local shop for the RepRap I'm building... nothing really fancy, just the bed, and some pieces where the circuit boards mount to.. a hundred bucks. I'm just going to cut the stuff myself with the tools I have on hand. I'm thinking it would be feasible to offer laser cutting services if I actually did build a laser cutter. It has to be cheaper than that to run one. I think the laser module needs replaced every 1000 hours or so, and it's a few hundred... so 30 cents every hour. They were charging $5 per minute of cutting time, plus a setup fee.
