Before I get start spending time working in it, would anyone else find a mobile layout version of thc helpful? Something that was designed for smartphones in mind?

I asked for this a few years ago. Krux told me I should code it. I reminded Krux that she-bang to me was a good night with a Hooter's waitress.

I'm up for it.

I just need to get at the code and see how to make some pages and what not. Krux runs everything on one page and I want to parse some of it out.

It's pretty usable right now though, once you log in, just use the mobile site and it's pretty quick.

Once you get the template done, I can switch it to the default for mobile phones, and such.

Ok.. making some progress here. If you go to your user pref and set the theme to 'mobile' you'll get what I am working on here.

Right now, in a mobile web browser, the default view is still to far wide. I removed the large width=<big number> areas in the the template and css file, but something is still making it big (maybe signatures?)

Also, I'd like to know how to change the default number of articles shown on the front page, if you aren't logged in.

In addition, and this is something I need to talk with krux about, using ajax for the sign-in, stats and links sections.

Oh and getting rid of the indentation. that's something else I want to fix.

if you look at it in landscape mode it's almost legible, but in portrait, no yet.

So there's that. Still working on it, but it's progress.

Ok.. for the basics.. assuming that people are using a smartphone of some modern system.. so 480px wide.. that covers iphone, n1, droid and palm pre.

The goofy part will be how to display threading..

Pinch zoom for websites is the suck. Most news sites with big ass banner ads just screw up the whole layout. Load up http://m.youtube.com or http://m.newegg.com you see how they scale automatically to the right font, it's a simple site and adjusts itself as needed? Pinch zoom doesn't work all that well and it doesn't always resize things right.

I prefer mobile sites that upsize the font and make everything to my default width. Pinch/expand is good for when you need to zoom in and out, like on a picture, but changing font sizes ought to be more flexible. I really dislike sites that assume I'll pinch past their vertical banner ads to read the 6 point font, and then I have to swipe left/right to read whole sentences.

Yeah, I would. I have the no graphics one selected, but that doesn't help matters much. Would be awesome if thcnet detected and showed the site in a full mobile version. srsly. I don't even use my computer at home anymore.

It has shown a stripped down version for HTC and Blazer browser for some time now. I've just never updated the check to look for other phone browser strings, since no one complained. I added in the strings for Android, iPhone, and WebOS.

Well, looking at it right now.. it's got the right theme (or lack there of, it was themed before - odd). I would like to see the icons for the thread bases removed, and maybe instead of having the bar on the left, do something like this..

for a user not logged in

---------------------------------------------------------
THC Logo [sign in]

thread #1

thread #2

thread #3

thread #4

thread #5

thread #6
----------------------- hr line ------------------
random post
----------------------- hr line ------------------
[stats] [user list] [archive] [links]
<search box> [search]

have a different page for each of the things below the second HR line and have the 'sign in' button go to another page and then come back with all threads, instead of 5

vBulletin has a theme like that for mobile phones. I love it so much I want to marry it. You can see an example of one in particular here (for the "mobile effect" on a desktop PC, simply resize the width of your browser window way down): http://www.thegearpage.net/board/?styleid=7

Read

Yes - I can read, see the developer stuff and I'm going to try and get around to figuring out all of what I'm looking at. But there's lots of templates and stuff that I need to look at first to understand how to make the changes work in a good way.

Show

This is the pinch zoom stuff I'm talking about. It would be nice if the page, or maybe a different domain, had a very reduced layout..

Look at the third one. See how much space there on the left side of the thread? It might be nice to have the page scale and bring up the text to a decent readable lever (note, these pics are taken from the phone, but with the res and the DPI they look bigger).

Honestly, I wouldn't even care if there was no indenting-threading on the mobile version. There just isn't enough real estate and besides people are pretty good about quoting. Anyway, replies almost always follow closely or directly from their antecedant.

Basically, fuck indenting on the mobile template. Heheh.

Word, I agree with that.

Not sure how the droids and pre's and stuff handle this, but I have a hard time on the iPhone deleting blocks of text I don't want to quote.
Selecting blocks of text and all the text is easy, but entire lines or paragraphs seems to be hard for some reason. Maybe it's the site formatting, or the way it zooms in and out for different things, but damn it's a PITA!

Piece of cake to select text on the Pre.

It's hard to select text with a touchscreen. On the droid, you can hold down in any text/type field and you get a popup allowing you to select, copy, paste, etc. But it only works for the whole content of the text/type block.

With the 2.2. Froyo update I've found text selctiona bit easier, but I have a trackball vs the Droid's touchpad.

Also, some sites (in 2.2) if you double click on the area you want to reat, they zoom to the proper size and flow the text correctly.. it's a nice touch.
